In 2016-17, the Town of Slave Lake undertook an extensive public engagement initiative and developed the Downtown and Main Street Area Structure Plan. This plan was unanimously approved by Council in October 2017 and provides a framework for revitalization of downtown and Main Street areas and outlines a series of catalyst projects beginning with the Rennie Hall Plaza redesign which has largely been completed.

    The following is an update on projects completed by category as identified in the Action Plan.

    Regulation/Policy

    1. Festival & Events Policy - Policy has not been drafted however, a Special Event Guideline document has been completed which provides detailed information for applicants applying for Special Events that are to be held on Town owned lands.
    2. Outdoor Boulevard Café - The Town issued permits for outdoor boulevard café in 2022, none required encroachment agreements.

    Incentive Programs

    1. Façade Improvement Program - Community Futures has launched its Beautification Loan Program, in cooperation with the Town of Slave Lake. The program offers interest-free loans for beautification of storefronts for business owners.
    2. Rennie Hall Plaza Redesign - Upgrades include leveling off raised concrete beds, removing flowerpots, installing decorative lights, painting, installing additional electrical outlets, and upgrading to street lighting allowing for more room and easy setup for community events.

    Advocacy

    1. Branding - A Town of Slave Lake rebrand and new visual identity were developed in 2022.

    Partnerships

    1. Downtown North expansion / EG Wahlstrom School Site Redevelopment - The High Prairie School Division is not interested in partnering with the Town to develop this area as commercial land however, it would support a lease for passive recreation uses in the area subject to an agreement.
