Home for All: Where Care Meets Community
Please Note: At the May 21, 2024 Regular Meeting of Council a motion was made by Council to suspend all operations at the Homeless Shelter until November 1, 2024.
Town of Slave Lake administration is working with the Government of Alberta to fully understand the implications of this decision. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
Finding a permanent homeless shelter location that serves ALL in our community
the Online Survey CLOSED MARCH 17, 2024
Thank you so much to everyone who joined us in-person or online to share your feedback and ideas over the past few weeks! Your feedback will help Council better understand community values, issues, and priorities related to the location of our homeless shelter in Slave Lake.
Over the past weeks, we've heard from community members through a variety of formats, including in-person community conversations, an online survey, emails, social media, and individual discussions.
What's Next?
Our online survey is now closed. We're currently working to consolidate and review all of the information collected during our community engagement. We will update this website later this spring with a summary of what we heard during our conversations.
How will my feedback used?
Understanding the best location for a homeless shelter involves considering various factors, including accessibility, community impact, and available resources. It ALSO requires your voice and perspective to ensure informed choices.
All the input and feedback we receive through this engagement process will be collected, analyzed and shared with Town Council, Town Administration and all participants in Spring 2024. The Town of Slave Lake is committed to considering and understanding the input gathered from this process as they make decisions about the permanent location of the homeless shelter.
Why this, why now?
Slave Lake is a community that looks after its own. We know that everyone in our community needs a safe place to sleep, stay warm, and find extra support when needed. This means that we've been providing shelter to people experiencing homelessness for many years.
While this is something we've always done, 'where' we've been providing these services and 'who' has been providing them has changed a number of times throughout the years.
That's why the Town of Slave Lake has secured provincial funding to operate a permanent shelter that's open 24/7. Finding a permanent location for the shelter will allow us to provide a consistent, stable place for people to access help and assistance, create efficiencies for service providers and also provide stability for community members located near the shelter.
The provincial funds have been used to purchase trailers that we are currently using to house our shelter (at the temporary location). We want to understand from the community what we should consider as we select a permanent location for these trailers. Choosing a permanent location for a shelter is a significant decision because it directly affects the well being and safety of those experiencing homelessness as well as the broader community.
The Town has identified five possible locations, but this isn't a vote. There are many things to consider, and we know a decision-making process that is inclusive, considers the perspectives of residents, service providers, and community members will serve us well.
Your Council is considering such things as accessibility, proximity to services, and community integration in creating a supportive environment for those in need. This engagement process was focused on hearing from you: What else do we need to be thinking about? What else should we consider?
Thank you to everyone who shared your ideas about the "where and why" of finding a permanent shelter location. Keep checking this page for updated information about this project. We also encourage you to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more project news and updates.
