After 18 months of dedicated work, the Town of Slave Lake is pleased to release the draft versions of the updated Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Land Use Bylaw (LUB) for public review and feedback.
These documents represent a comprehensive review and rewrite of our key planning policies and regulations. The drafts are now available for the public to examine and provide input before they proceed to Council for consideration. As part of this process, we invite all residents and stakeholders to attend a final open house on June 9, 2025, at the Town Office from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This event is an opportunity to learn more about the proposed changes and ask questions ahead of the formal bylaw readings.
Following First Reading by Council later in June, a Public Hearing will be scheduled to provide one more opportunity for community members to share their feedback before the bylaws are finalized.
This project has been a collaborative effort between Town Administration, Council, residents, and key stakeholders. Early in the process, Administration set clear goals for the project, including:
Streamlining content and improving overall readability
Reducing red tape and regulatory barriers
Enhancing transparency and accessibility
Supporting modern development and business practices
Respecting and protecting existing land uses
Reflecting current trends and emerging needs in the community
Incorporating meaningful community input throughout
The resulting draft documents reflect these objectives in a number of ways, including:
Allowing for increased use of secondary suites to support housing flexibility
Reducing landscaping requirements in industrial areas to improve feasibility
Combining and simplifying zoning districts and uses for clarity
Reorganizing content and adding visuals such as tables and graphics to enhance user navigation
Aligning regulations with modern trends and community expectations
Embedding community feedback to ensure alignment with local values and priorities
We are pleased with the work that has gone into this update and are confident these documents will better serve the Town’s planning and development needs moving forward. Your continued engagement is vital to ensuring these tools reflect a shared vision for the future of Slave Lake.
